Message from the Chair
Save the date for Friday 1 September 2017.

Country SA PHN are planning a board development and governance training workshop with a networking reception to follow. This is a great opportunity for GPs interested in being involved in medico-political bodies as well as organisations such as the PHN and service delivery groups. It is also a good chance for individuals involved in community organisations, boards, advisory committees and councils to enhance their governance training and health literacy.
The program is currently being formulated but I think this will be a very useful workshop for those with or without management experience to understand what is involved and help broaden the availability of trained personnel to populate the vast array of rural boards as well as our own.

We hope to cover the board role, financial responsibilities, clinical governance as well as a focus on health literacy and improving understanding of where primary health sits within the broader health system.

I look forward to meeting a wide variety of interested GPs, clinicians, managers and community members on the day. More information will be available via the PHN and through this newsletter as details are confirmed.

People are living longer than ever before. Living longer does not, however, mean living forever, and an ageing population means we also need to consider how we support older Australians as they approach death.
Eighty percent of Australians who died in 2010-2011 aged 65 or over had used aged care services in the eight years prior to their death, and three-quarters of this group had used an aged care service during the 12 months before they died. Read more...

Medicinal Cannabis – patient access in South Australia
SA Health recently undertook public and targeted consultation about patient access to medicinal cannabis in South Australia. This took into account the national legislative framework established by the Commonwealth to facilitate appropriate patient access to certain medicinal cannabis products for medical conditions where there is evidence to support its use.
Following the consultation a patient access pathway for medicinal cannabis has been developed which is aligned with the existing legislated requirements for Schedule 8 medicines (noting one medicinal cannabis derivative, cannabidiol, is a Schedule 4 product and can be prescribed as such). Increasing Bowel Cancer Screening in General Practice
Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, especially for people aged over 50. If found early, bowel cancer can be successfully treated 90% of the time. There is strong evidence that a letter signed by a person’s GP endorsing Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) is an effective method to increase patient participation in bowel cancer screening.
The National Bowel Screening Program has developed a letter template which can be used by general practice to remind patents of their eligibility to undertake bowel screening through completion of a FOBT. The letter is available as either a word document or PDF via the National Bowel Screening Program website at
