Message from the CEO

We have been very pleased to receive advice from the Commonwealth Minister for Health, of funds to be provided to continue the valuable services in mental health delivered by the numerous organisations contracted by Country SA PHN across rural SA. Current funding expires in June of this year and the announcement provides surety into the future beyond June. Also in the announcement, was approval of a process to ensure PHN and through the PHN, provider funding, is by way of roll over of contracts each year, permitting continuation of contracts and negating that difficult period of insecurity leading up to the contract extension time.

The Commonwealth is also currently seeking expressions of interest for grants under the Community Health and Hospitals program, that would provide significant funds for new initiatives in our region. Both Country Health and Country SA PHN are eligible for the grants and have consulted with each other to seek out opportunities.

Opportunity also exists for expansion of headspace activity, with the Commonwealth seeking advice from the PHNs regarding our priorities, based on evidenced need, for additional or extended services under the headspace model of service. Clearly we will be providing input to same.

These are all very welcome advents for our region.

Update on National Cervical Screening Program - Routine rescreen reminders

During November and in early December 2018, the national Register commenced sending reminders to women who are overdue for their next routine Cervical Screening Test. This correspondence is being sent using a staged approach, prioritising letters to women who are most overdue.
From early January 2019, the volume of these letters will increase until early February 2019 to address a backlog, after which time normal mail distribution volumes will resume. Some healthcare providers may experience an increase in patient enquiries and requests for cervical screening tests during this period. For more information visit the National Cancer Screening Register.

7 linkage strategies that can improve quality of care
A systematic literature review previously conducted at QUT revealed early evidence that seven linkage strategies have the potential to improve service and client outcomes in aged care.

ELDAC is using these strategies to create mutually beneficial partnerships between aged, specialist palliative care and primary care services, following successful case studies. If you’re interested in using these strategies and would like support from ELDAC’s team of facilitators, at no cost to your organisation, find out more on our blog or email to get involved.
