Message from the CEO

SA Health are currently undertaking the development of a new Strategic Plan to take them to 2020 but providing vision for beyond 2020. As part of their work there will be consultation with the community and with providers about how SA Health can shape its on going work.

This work is a very welcome opportunity for communities and providers to provide valuable local input and feedback and potentially help to shape the future of health services across our region. This is a once every five years or so opportunity and we should keep our ear to the ground for all potential to be involved and actively engaged with the consultation processes. Essentially; to influence activity, one must be around the table and as rural communities we need to grab as many seats at the table as we can, in order to ensure future activity meets local needs. 2 in 5 people are unaware they have this chronic illness and 3,041 are living in Country SA

Country SA is home to over 3,000 people living with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and an estimated 38% remain undiagnosed.

Those who are at risk should be opportunistically tested and in Australia, 70% of people living with CHB come from two priority populations. People born overseas in countries with intermediate to high HBV prevalence (Asia/Pacific, Europe, Africa and the Middle East) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

For more information about who else should be tested for hepatitis B, see the National Hepatitis B Testing Policy.

Pre-diabetes: a catalyst for positive lifestyle change

Two million Australians are living with pre-diabetes. With no obvious signs or symptoms, many are unaware of the condition. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in up to 58 per cent of people through lifestyle changes including; a healthy diet, regular exercise and weight loss.

Enjoying a wide variety of nutritious food is associated with a reduced risk of chronic disease. Despite misconceptions, evidence indicates milk, cheese and yoghurt, including regular fat varieties are not linked with type 2 diabetes risk or weight gain.

Click here to use the pre-diabetes management guide developed by the Foods That Do Good team and reviewed by Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.
