Message from the Chair
 
Country SA PHN recently hosted a day of governance training to provide an opportunity for our Board and staff, as well as a range of stakeholders and those interested in stepping into a Board role in the future. It was a really useful day and I would recommend it to any prospective Board directors when it is next run. (full workshop article inside this edition)
 
This week, I have had a couple of days in Canberra at the National PHN Forum with senior executive staff hearing updates from the Department and sharing ideas with other PHNs around the country. Read more...

National Cervical Screening Program -  Healthcare provider online training modules are now available
 
The National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) aims to reduce morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer in a cost-effective manner through an organised approach to screening.
 
Currently the NCSP promotes routine screening with a pap smear test every two years for women aged 18 to 69 years. On 1 December 2017, the NCSP will be moving to a five yearly HPV test for woman aged 25 to 74 years. Read more...

HealthPathways Launch-Videos Now Available!

The HealthPathways South Australia program had a “kick off” launch event on 17 July 2017 to introduce the team and program.

The launch provided an opportunity to showcase what has been achieved in New Zealand and Western Australia following HealthPathways implementation there, and to promote how local health professionals can get involved. Read more...

Upcoming Open Tender for Integrating Primary Health Care Services 
 
Country SA PHN (CSAPHN) is excited to be releasing an open tender on Tuesday 3 October 2017 for Integrating Primary Health Care Services (IPHCS) to commence 1 July 2018.

CSAPHN is endeavouring to improve access to primary health services that are additional to General Practice through the IPHCS Tender, which has a focus on improving health outcomes of country South Australians, particularly for those with physical chronic and complex conditions. Read more...

Indigenous Suicide Prevention Forum
 
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and service providers from across Australia came together in Port Augusta to address suicide prevention and intervention strategies within Indigenous communities.
 
The two-day forum, hosted by Country SA PHN and Black Dog Institute’s LifeSpan team, began on Monday 28 August and focused on suicidal crisis and follow up care, with a particular emphasis on what works for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Read more...

Doctors’ Health SA on the rural road again
 
Doctors’ Health SA (DHSA) has been awarded further funding from Country SA PHN to continue to promote doctors health across country South Australia.
 
Over 100 rural doctors participated in the Healthy Doctors Dinner Seminars in nine rural locations during the previous financial year. The success of these seminars and the positive feedback from doctors has supported the opportunity to take the Healthy Doctors Dinners to other rural regions. Read more...

Palliative Care SA is Launching "Speak Up" a campaign to ask South Australians how they want to be cared for in the final stages of life.

Country SA PHN held a full day Good Governance Workshop on Friday 1 September 2017 at the Crowne Plaza, Adelaide. Nurses' and doctors' perceptions and experiences providing end-of-life care in Australian emergency department settings

The study findings will help to identify barriers and facilitators to providing safe and effective care for patients who die in the Emergency Department (ED) and to identify practical and emotional supports required by nurses and doctors to assist them to provide this care to patients and their families. Results of this study could help improve the planning and delivery of future end-of-life care practices and services in Australian EDs.
 

RDASA Masterclass IV
 
Country SA PHN were pleased to support the RDASA Masterclass IV held at the Crowne Plaza, Adelaide from the 25 to 27 August 2017. Masterclass IV was an excellent opportunity for CSAPHN staff to engage with health professionals and build rapport and understanding across the rural health spectrum. 

GPs attending the conference were provided information on upcoming CPD sessions as well as general information on CSAPHN activity and support available to the regions.
Country SA PHN were also pleased, to work with event partners Sound Radiology and MIGA, to facilitate a Rural GP Radiology Update on Friday 25 August as a pre-conference workshop for the RDASA Masterclass. The event was well attended by GPs from across country SA.

GPs who attended reported that "the session was invaluable, as it’s really hard for rural doctors to get their Radiology points".
